About Me

A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

Wednesday Workbench 15 July and Lockdown Podcast #16

After finishing the arcade building yesterday, I finally started work on these bits of scatter terrain (you know, the ones I was meant to start last week...). I managed to get all the base colours down and apply the wash before going to bed. However, today I've been feeling a bit lousy, so I've only managed to get the first round of highlighting done. I will probably finish them tomorrow if all goes well.

Madaxeman Lockdown Podcast #16

The 16th episode of the podcast got released into the wild last night. It took a bit longer than usual for this to happen, because Timmy hadn't taken his audio clip files with him on his sojourn to the country pile. Hopefully episode 17 (which we recorded last night) won't suffer such a delay.

Finished: Arcade for Judge Dredd

It's taken a little bit longer than anticipated to finish this (mainly because I had forgotten that the layered approached to adding posters, graffiti and weathering takes quite a bit of additional time), but it is done. As you can see from the photo, it's quite a large building.

A couple of the graffiti decals I used were the ones I had printed on white decal paper (but weren't the ones I had more carefully scored around to minimise the white around the edges.

I've just realised that I forgot to take a photo of the interior at the end. I did take a couple after assembly though:

The kit comes with three MDF arcade game machines, which I have assembled and primed:

I'll get them painted up in the next few days. They will be a stop-gap until I can get some 3D printed ones (I have the files, just need to get them printed by someone).

I also added one of the white-backed decals to one of the darker shipping containers from a few eeks back, to see how they look:

They definitely work much better than the ones done on clear decal paper (which end up rather muted). I think I will use them for "fresh" graffiti and the ones I had printed on clear paper for older stuff.

Paint Table Saturday 11 July

You may remember that on Wednesday I said I would be starting work on these bits:

Well, I got distracted and haven't done anything with them yet. The distractions have, however, been productive.

Infamy, Infamy! Tokens and Chips

I spent the past couple of days painting and varnishing (both sides) these tokens and poker chips.

Multiverse Gaming VersaTiles

In between doing other things on Thursday and Friday I assembled the VersaTiles and connectors. Each tiles is 30cm x 30cm and has a recessed frame underneath - the recess allows it to slot into "foundation" frames which  create elevations (they also make half-height "terraces" for partial elevations).

Connectors - enough for a 3' x 3' layout; I'll need to get an extra pack

Crossroads - there are two in the stack

T-Junction - two of these in the stack

Straight roads - all three from the stack

"Plaza" tiles - I have six of these.
I had ordered the bundle which contains 4 plaza sections, 3 straight sections and 2 T-Junctions, and added two more plaza tiles and the two crossroads. I will probably be ordering some more straight road tiles, some right-angle road tiles, more connectors and possibly some blank tiles, foundations, terraces and bridges/walkways.

Prep and Priming

I also decided to prep a few more bits of MDF terrain. I prepped and assembled some vending machines yesterday. They got primed along with some bits which I had assembled a few weeks ago.

This morning I did an initial priming on the sprue of the parts for TT Combat's "Arcade" building, then extracted all the bits, sanded down the tags, did a dry-fit to work out which bits might need to be re-primed and assembled a few bits where it made sense to do so. I then did the re-priming where needed. Tomorrow I'll be putting down base colours with the airbrush before completing the assembly.

Who knows - maybe I'll even get to start work on painting those bits that I was meant to start painting on Thursday!

Finished: Jersey Barriers & T-Walls for Judge Dredd (and Wednesday Workbench 08 July)

Having taken Monday off from painting, yesterday I opted to go for something quick to paint - a load of concrete barriers from Antenocitis Workshop. Of course, me being me, I went through a lot more steps than were really necessary, but I think ti was worth it. I had all the painting and washes done by last night leaving me with varnishing and decals to do today.

I deliberately didn't put decals on all of them, and the ones I did were fairly generic graffiti so that these can be used for games other than Judge Dredd. I also only used the decals that I had printed myself - the extra coat of decal medium and scoring around the decals to minimise the amount of excess film certainly helped, as did using MicroSet to fix them before using Micro Sol.

Jersey Barriers

T-Walls

Tonight or tomorrow I will be starting work on these bits of scatter terrain:

Yesterday I took delivery of a fairly heavy consignment of MDF from Multiverse Gaming:

These are some of their "VersaTiles", a mix of street and plaza boards. I spent yesterday evening and a bit of this morning cleaning them up ready for spray priming. That will have to wait for a few days as the forecast is for rain until next week. That gives me plenty of time to assemble them though.

I also printed out some more graffiti images, this time on white decal paper (which should make the colours a bit more vibrant):

Having learned from my previous go, I will let the ink dry overnight then give them a spray coat of gloss varnish before applying the decal medium (by brush rather than risking my airbrush) and leaving 24 hours between the first and second coats.

Lockdown Podcast #15

Somehow we have now reached episode 15 of the Madaxeman Lockdown podcast series. Listen in to hear:

  • what we had all painted in the past week and our plans for what is now last week
  • some games that some of us have played
  • encounters with Australian wildlife
  • about Yorkshiremen saying "Bastard!" as we cover the Peninsular war in "Teaching Timmy About Napoleonics"
  • the answers to Andy's Quiz from last week and the questions for this week
  • one of my mates taking the piss out of my knowledge of hobby techniques

We'll be recording Episode 16 this evening (without Timmy this week).

Finished: Cars and Taxis for Judge Dredd

As these beauties were so close to being finished yesterday, I decided against doing a "Paint Table Saturday" post. I'm sure you'll agree that they were worth waiting for.

The vehicles are all resin models from Antenocitis Workshop's "Designed for Infinity" range.

VT Fairlane Taxi Cabs

The three-pack was meant to come with decals, but they were missing. Antenocitis are going to be slipping them in with my next order (which should ship in a week or two once they are up and running again in their new location).

I guess you'll be seeing another post of these three once the decals arrive and have been applied!

Eco-Cars Pangit City Cars

Anomala "Beetle" Cars

Bulabok City Cars

These come in "drive" configuration...

...and parked configuration.

Prepping these was a bit of a grind, but they were fun to paint.
