A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

River Test 2

Time for an update I guess. I've been doing some more figure prep during my lunch breaks this week - at the moment I'm working on some reinforcements for my 6mm ACW armies. When they're done I'll start prepping the Essex figures I picked up at SELWG. Once they're all done, it will be time to get them stuck onto sticks or bases and primed.

Anyway, I've been taking it a little bit easy today and did another test paint on that river section, this time starting with the dark green and wet blending some Payne's Grey and some olive green into it.I still wasn't happy with the look - too much of the dark blue, so I added another thin coat of the dark green with a few more olive streaks blended in:

I think that going forward the best thing would be to paint some thin patches of Payne's Grey before adding the dark green with olive streaks.

Tomorrow I've got my new dining table and chair being delivered - it's 90 x 150cm (3' x 5') so should be ideal for home gaming, especially if I get some 2' x 4' MDF boards to take it up to 4' x 6'.

  1. Good luck experimenting with river colours. I eventually settled on a aqua/brown mix. Regarding you table. Isn't funny how many normal decisions we make are influenced by this hobby of ours!

  2. A combination of poor eyesight and small computer screen means I cannot tell the difference between test 1 and test 2. But that does not matter whatever you decide is the right colour will be the right colour.

  3. Rivers are hard things to paint in Wargames. I prefer a brown to a blue.

  4. Quite like number one, but I suppose a tad dark for a river?

  5. Great looking river sections. I always go with a blue green coloring less for realism and more for clarity - it's a river, not a road.

  6. I reckon with a bit more brown, and some slightly lighter greens around the edges, you'd nail what you're going for.

  7. I really like #1 but I can understand it may be too blue for a river

  8. I agree with Jon and Michael, in my personal preference for the bluer Test #1. But again, that's a personal preference. I use JR Miniatures' Aerial Blue rivers for my table. To me, water just = blue, I suppose.

  10. @ David C - yup, definitely a case of choosing the table for it's gaming potential :)

@ Clint - cheers! For info, Test 1 is about 90% blue, 10% dark green; Test 2 is about 80% dark green, 15% blue, 5% olive. I think I'll probably go with 90% dark green, 10% olive :)

@ Simon J - brown would definitely be more realistic for most rivers :)

@ Michael A - it is a bit too dark really; it might work for some really wide and deep rivers [which these aren't meant to portray] :)

@ Miles - cheers! You definitely need to be able to distinguish them from roads! :)

@ Jake - as you say, I'm almost there :)

@ Jon - I quite liked it too, but it was a bit too dark really :)

@ JWomack - I did think of going with a classic blue look, but decided to try for a more realistic colour :)
