About Me

A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

AHPC XIII - 12th Submission

I only had the one figure submitted as an entry this week - an old school early 1980s Hobgoblin by Citadel. I submitted it for the 1980s (or retro) studio.

Full post here

That leaves me with just two studios - World Cinema and Historical Drama - to visit to have done something for every studio. I've got figures I can use for both of them, and I should be able to get them done this week, leaving me free to focus on finishing the Type S and some extras to go with it until the end of the Challenge.

Speaking of the Type S, I'm almost done with the hull pieces:

Just a few details left to do, then some touch-ups and varnishing. I also need to hit all the interior pieces with a coat of matt varnish before I assemble the ship.

AHPC XIII - 7th and 8th Submissions

I decided to split my submissions over two posts this week.

Entry #7 - 15mm Gallic Cavalry

These are the ones that I didn't have time to do last week, so got carried over for submission this week.

Entry #8 - '80s Drow

For the "Fantasy" studio, I decided to paint up some early 1980s (pre-slotta) Citadel Drow. They'd been sitting unpainted in my collection for about 40 years, so it was about time they got some love.

I've got one more studio to do before plonking myself down in the Director's Chair and being given a fiendish task by the Show Lord; I suspect that task will be to crack on and paint the 28mm Type S scout Courier which was meant to be my main focus for this year's Challenge. As that job will take me several weeks, I will paint up a few odd figures each week, if only to have something to post.

Wednesday Workbench 01 February 2023

The Gallic cavalry are almost done, with just a quick drybrush and adding static grass left to finish the basing - a job for tomorrow morning.

While waiting for the basing steps to dry, I've made a start on a trio of figures for the Fantasy studio:

I've got the base colours down on all of them and will be finishing them off tomorrow.

AHPC X Day 18 - Fourth Submission

My forth submission for this year's Challenge was this quartet of early 80s Citadel armoured orcs. Here's a link to the post: link

I'm currently in 17th position on the table, but expect to slip down quite a bit over the next few days as my next submission will take me a few days to finish painting.

I've also done a little bit of work on a later entry today, but no pics r details until it's been submitted.

AHPC6 Entries - 28mm Character Figures

And the time comes at last for my final summary post of this year's Challenge entries - the 28mm character figures.

My opening salvo on the first day of the Challenge was this rather characterful figure from Hasslefree, whom fans of the original (UK) version of Shameless will recognise that I have painted up as Frank Gallagher (as portrayed by David Thewlis):

I wasn't the only person who had painted this figure for the Challenge - Anne painted him for her "Revenge on Ray" entry in the last bonus theme round. I think someone may have painted him last year as well for their AntiHero.

Moving on, my second entry of character figures was "I'll Be Max!" I had bought these two figures from Hasslefree, but they're now sold directly by Studio Miniatures.

It took a lot of effort (and trial & error) to make the black leather tones look right and different. For the Arnie figure, I also wanted to capture the pallid, dead flesh look from the first film. I think I got pretty close.

The fourth character figure was a bit of a departure for me - a High Elf rogue from Citadel. Quite fun to paint, but some of the details were tricky to access.

The fifth and final character figure was also my Curtgeld. The theme for this year's Challenge was "Risk Takers, Gamblers and Daredevils". I think that Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (from the reimagined Battlestar Galactica) is an excellent embodiment of all three.

The figure I used is "Pilot Vic" from Hasslefree.

Phew - that's a lot of painting done in 13 weeks!

Analogue Painting Challenge: Ronin #46

(pre-written and scheduled to post on Boxing Day while I'm down in Sussex recovering from Tuesday's festival of gluttony!)

Well, here you go, my first entry to the 3rd Analogue Painting Challenge is my "entry fee", a lovingly painted 25/28mm Samurai figure which will shortly be wending it's way over the Atlantic to Curt.

The figure is a mid/lat 1980s Citadel Miniatures Samurai which I must have bought when I was still playing D&D. I never got round to painting it back then and found it last year after I'd got back into gaming.

Painting this figure was fun. After gluing the figure onto a 32mm washer I added basing gunk and a couple of small rocks. Once the gunk was dry, the figure received two thin coats of Vallejo white polyurethane primer and after the 2nd had dried a thin wash of black paint was applied to the whole figure. When the wash had dried, I dry-brushed with off-white. the idea was for the black to provide deep shading and the off-white to provide natural highlighting under the thinned down paints I would be using. The sword blade and chain mail sleeves were undercoated with black.

The metals were done by dry-brushing successively with Gunmetal Grey, Oily Steel and Silver. The guard-piece was dry-brushed with Old Gold. Painting was done using thinned down paints, getting progressively lighter and thicker. Guessing that the other participants would probably go for riotous colour schemes for their samurai, I opted to do something a bit different and went for a rich dark brown for the trousers and a golden-brown for the jacket/vest. I reserved bright colours for the sword hilt and scabbards.

The base was mainly done by dry-brushing after an initial thinned coat of Flat Earth, using Iraqi Sand and various greys. The rocks started out black, with successively lighter shades of grey being used to highlight it.

Once painting was complete, the figure was sealed and shaded with my usual Klear/ink mix, then sprayed with matt varnish. I then used brush-on satin varnish on the cloth and hair, and gloss on the sword blade and scabbards to make them "pop".

After varnishing, the base was given a final dry-brush to tone down the effects of the Klear/ink coat, then tufts and flock were added.

Anyway, that's more than enough verbiage to have made you read on Boxing Day, so here's the eye candy:

I'll be back home on Thursday, and will have to crack on with my first batch of figures for the Challenge - the Croat light horse. I'm hoping to get them finished before I have to go back to work on the 3rd.

Some Old Citadel Miniatures

I haven't done any painting this evening. After my post last night I got stuck into prepping the next batch of figures for painting. So far I've prepped 2 artillery pieces plus crews and bits; 24 horses for the cuirassiers and have started prepping the cuirassiers themselves. I'll also be prepping the 24 "Croat" light horse.

Anyway, onto the subject of this post.

Back at Salute in April, one of the bloggers at the meet-up mentioned that he was trying to get hold of Citadel dark elves from the 1980s. I said I thought I had some back at my Dad's house and would try to dig them out. Well, when I was down for my sister's birthday the other week I looked through the box and found them. I also dug out some orcs, a hobgoblin (I think), 2 ogres and some human characters.

The main problem is....

....I can't remember who the blogger was. If it was you, or you see this and know who it was, please let me know. And if anyone wants the orcs, hobgoblin and ogres please let me know. The humans I'll keep for myself for fun character painting as a break from my normal stuff.

Here are some pics of the figures. Some of them had been primed with white enamel back in the 80s, so I've been doing my best to get it all off - there's still a bit left on the figures, but not enough to obscure any details.

I' pretty sure the three shiny ones were dark elves, but could be wrong (the "slotta" says ELF)

Samurai, berserker, street thug and buccaneer - I should have fun painting these up

Two ugly bu***rs, errmm, incredibly handsome Ogres.

Orcs and the suspected hobgoblin (on the right).
